Over time the skin and musculature of our faces begins to sag and square off around the jawline. This is often due to a combination of genetics, environment and just the natural course of aging. Unfortunately for some, this process can happen sooner than you’d like. And until recently, the only way to address this skin laxity was with an expensive and invasive face lift. Thankfully, we now have another tool in fighting the forces of gravity in the aging process - a PDO Thread Lift.
A PDO Thread lift is a procedure that uses subcutaneous dissolvable sutures to instantly lift and tighten the skin on your face and neck. It’s essentially a facelift without the expense and complications!
PDO, or polydioxanone threads, are biodegradable sutures that are placed under the skin through micro incisions. The treads instantly help to lift and tighten by helping to suspend sagging areas of the skin. They have an added benefit of helping to rejuvenate and tighten the skin via collagen stimulation. While the treads are in place, your body works overtime to expel them, generating healing growth factors and collagen in the process.
Common areas where PDO threads are used include the jowls, neck and jawline, nasolabial folds and marionette lines, and brow lifts.
A local anesthetic is applied prior to the treatment to help alleviate pain. Some patients do find the procedure uncomfortable, but the discomfort is nominal when compared to a facelift.
The procedure can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. First, we apply a topical anesthetic to the skin and allow it some time to take effect. Once numbed, a thin needle is inserted under your skin to place the threads in the desired treatment areas. Once threads are inserted and the threading needle is removed, your skin will likely feel very tight and under some pressure. This is normal and your skin will adjust over the next several days.
PDO threads are designed to dissolve over time and they typically last in the skin from about 6 months up to 9 months, though the rejuvenation results can last much longer. The duration really depends on a variety of factors including the placement, types of threads used and the individual’s metabolic rate.
